International architecture, landscape and interior design firm Snøhetta is opening a new public park in midtown this fall, taking over a space at 550 Madison Avenue between 55th and 56th Streets "with a glass canopy that gives [it] an indoor-outdoor feel," reports NBC New York. It's a green oasis inside of a very New York-like building, in-between two skyscrapers.

Postmodern architecture emerged in the late 1960s, largely as a rection to the modernist movement which was focused on formality, rigidity, and uniformity; and discouraged things like ornamentation or reference to history to history or place. In contrast, postmodernism encourages a freethinking approach to architecture. Postmodern architects borrow freely from a variety of sources, even beyond the realms of architecture. They have no aversion to ornamentation and see their work in an historic cultural context.

YIMBY attended the recent unveiling of the newly renovated lobby of 550 Madison Avenue, a 37-story, 684-foot-tall office skyscraper in Midtown East. Designed by Gensler and developed by The Olayan Group and RXR Realty, the project involves a 21,000-square-foot indoor-outdoor overhaul of the 1984 postmodern landmark from Philip Johnson and John Burgee.
